The Cooktown Discovery Festival is an
annual event held to celebrate the landing
of Lt. James Cook at the Endeavour River in
1770 and his meeting with the local Guugu
Yimithirr and Kuku Yalanji people. For 50 years,
the people of Cooktown have come together
in June to celebrate this historic event by
staging a fully costumed re-enactment
of Cook’s landing and his time spent in
this tropical paradise with the local Bama
(Aboriginal people).

LAURA HORSE SPORTS

The Laura Rodeo and Races are the premier
social events for many people who call Cape
York Peninsula home.
The Horse Sports are also held over the same
weekend, with locals and visitors competing in
traditional events such as the barrel races.

This community run event is supported
by Cook Shire Council and showcases the
produce of the local pastoral and horticultural
industries. This wonderful day offers a range of
activities, competitions, carnival sideshows and
