The history is just the beginning...
cape york peninsula
In the 1860s construction began
on the Overland Telegraph Line.
The northern section ran through very
difficult country – the telegraph survey
expedition was only the fourth overland
expedition ever made to Cape York.
Break your journey to the tip of Cape
York in peaceful surrounds on the
bank of the Wenlock River. Just 293
kilometres from the tip is the site of
the historic Moreton Telegraph Station,
offering camping and safari tent options
for your overnight stay.
Did you know?...
The Old Telegraph Track
The
Old Telegraph Track
really starts after
Bramwell Junction and continues up to the
Jardine River. It is important to have a
properly
equipped 4WD for this adventurous route
and most experienced 4WD travellers to the
Cape will take the OTT north then return by
the Bypass roads. Driving north you will need
to negotiate
several creek crossings
, some
of which have challenging entry and exit
points. In
Heathlands Reserve
don’t miss the
lovely
Fruit Bat Falls
which offer a refreshing
swim stop on the way to the campground at
the stunning natural pools at
Eliot Falls and
Twin Falls.
