Getting Here
The
Peninsula Development Road
(PDR) is
the main artery from Lakeland Downs all the
way up Cape York. The road is graded at the
end of the wet season but becomes more
corrugated as the dry season progresses.
Roadhouses are conveniently positioned along
the PDR for rest stops and fuel – travelling
north you will pass
Lakeland Roadhouse
,
Laura Roadhouse
,
Hann River Roadhouse
,
Musgrave Roadhouse
,
Archer River
Roadhouse
and
Bramwell Junction
which
signals the start of the
Old Telegraph Track
.
Taste the adventure on the
Old Telegraph
Track
(OTT) –
a legendary 4WD track
which continues up to the
Jardine River
ferry crossing. The OTT follows the original
telegraph line through the Peninsula, and
for much of the Cape’s history was the only
available route. The OTT is a challenging road
and passes through some beautiful country
with several creek and river crossings –
4WD
experience is essential
.
Alternatively there are two bypass roads that
allow travellers to get from the Peninsula
Development Road to
The Tip
without having
to navigate all of the creek crossings and rough
sections – these pass through the highlands to
the east and west of the OTT.
