River Fishing
Cooktown is also home to the magnificent
river systems of the
Annan
and
Endeavour
Rivers
. Both rivers lay claim to some of
the
best fishing
in Far North Queensland.
These
pristine jungle-clad
rivers with their
mangrove-lined estuaries are perfect for the
keen beginner or the most experienced angler.
Some
excellent fishing
can be found in the
North Arm of the Endeavour River, by casting
lures to the numerous snags and fallen giants
of the rainforest that litter the waterway.
Big barramundi, monster spanish mackerel,
queenies and trevally
are regularly caught
from The Endeavour and Annan rivers.
Book a morning or afternoon fishing charter
with one of the local operators.
Land Based Fishing
Local beaches such as Walker Bay, the mouth
of the Annan, near the old Annan bridge, the
stone wall at Marton, Finch Bay, Quarantine
Bay, Archer Point with its coastal reef and
the old Wharf all have
excellent land-based
options
for the whole family.
A wilderness experience can be enjoyed
in
Rinyurru (Lakefield) National Park
,
Queensland’s second largest Park chasing big
barra, or keep driving through onto the coast
of Princess Charlotte Bay where all types of
tropical fishing can be had from a base camp.
Using a guide to explore these remote areas
is recommended.
Boat ramps are found at Cooktown
wharf, Marton, Big Annan Bridge and
Bloomfield River.
