Black Mountain
National Park
The
mysterious
Black Mountains are steeped
in
myths and legends
, and are a special story
place for the
Kuku Yalanji
people. There is a
viewing area
signposted from the highway with
interpretive signage giving an insight into this
incredible
rock formation
.
Mount Cook National Park
Mount Cook acts as a stunning rainforest clad
backdrop to Cooktown. Originally named
Gore’s Mount by Captain Cook, the name of
the mountain was changed in 1819 to Mt Cook
by Phillip Parker King who was unaware of the
original title.
A
walking track
climbs steeply for 2km to the
Waymburr lookout
and just before the trail
mounts the long spur to the summit, a short
path on the right leads to a
lookout with
views over Cooktown
. From the junction
the summit trail zigzags up to a saddle where
another short path leads to a
lookout
with
fantastic views over the Great Barrier Reef, and
then up to the peak at 431 metres.
The start of the trail is signposted from the end
of
Ida Street
in Cooktown.
The
Mount Cook hiking trail
is an exhilarating
walk requiring a good level of fitness. The first
section of the track is
being upgraded in
2012
to provide greater accessibility and
will include a viewing platform at the first
lookout point.
